Macomb County Sheriff Aviation Reserve Unit FAQ'sQ: Can non-pilots be members of the Aviation Reserve Unit? A: Yes. Non-pilots can become members of this Unit to be used as observers and administrative help.
Q: Are Unit members required to wear uniforms and carry firearms? A: No. Our members are deputized but our function is limited to air support only to law enforcement units on the ground. Our contact with the public will be minimal as we are confined to aircraft.
Q: Will I be reimbursed for my time and fuel costs? A: No. At this time there will be no re-imbursement for time, fuel, equipment, or aircraft expense. All contributions are voluntary.
Q: What are my personal liabilities as a member of the Aviation Reserve Unit.? A: Exactly the same as they are right now as a private citizen. The liability limits set by the Unit require that enough liability insurance be carried by participating aircraft to cover any occurrence that may happen. Each member is required to have their own medical insurance. The County’s insurance will pick up where your own may leave off should this become necessary.
Q: What special training is required for membership into the Aviation unit? A: Our missions are limited to operating aircraft in support of law enforcement ground units and our training will be specific to slow flight, communications, and general pilot proficiency. Any special training will be decided upon by committee at the request of the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office. There will be no specific “police” training requirements.
Q: How will the Unit’s activities be scheduled and what will my personal time commitment be? A: The Units activities will be scheduled by committee. These committees will be set up once the general membership is chosen. There will be general membership meetings once a month for at least three months in the beginning. We anticipate the first general membership meeting to take place in June, 2004. Attendance to these general membership meetings is mandatory for all first year members as detailed in the A.R.U. By-Laws. There are exceptions to this rule but attendance is strongly encouraged. Flight time and mission participation will be decided by committee.
Q: Are my cash contributions in the way of fees, dues, fuel expense, and aircraft expense, to the Aviation Reserve Unit tax deductible? A: At this time the answer to this question is not known. The Aviation Reserve Unit is set up as a Not-for-Profit corporation. We are researching the criteria for our status to become that of a 501(c)3. A 501(c)3 foundation is a foundation that allows individuals and businesses and organizations to donate gifts, money, or land to a district with 501(c)3 status and receive a tax benefit. To secure 501(c)3 status, a district must meet all of the necessary guidelines as spelled out by the Department of the Treasury Internal Revenue Service. If this can be done then all or a portion of each member’s cash contributions will become tax deductible. |
