In January
2007, Lt. Heythaler was transferred from the Narcotics Division (COMET) to the
midnight shift. Lt. Heythaler started his career on October 26, 1978 as a
correctional officer. He then attended the
Macomb Police Academy in January of 1982. He was promoted to Deputy Sheriff
several months later in June. As a Deputy Sheriff, he worked as a
road patrol officer, court transport officer, circuit court officer,
evidence technician,
undercover narcotics officer, surveillance officer and a member of the
dive team.
In September of 1994 he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant 1, then to Sergeant
in September of 1998. In January of 2001 he was promoted to Lieutenant. His
previous assignments as a sergeant were as a
Detective Bureau Investigator, Assistant team leader in the
Narcotics Division,
Search and Recovery Diver, Shift Command, Road Command, Hostage Negotiator
and a Breathalyzer Operator. As a lieutenant he has been in charge of the
Detective Bureau, Narcotics Division and the Search and Recovery Dive Team.
In addition to Lt. Heythaler's current assignment as the Midnight Shift
Commander, he is also in charge of the department’s Hostage Negotiation team.
Lt. Heythaler has attended over 90 seminars that relates to the correctional and
law enforcement fields. He has also attained a degree from
Macomb Community College.
