Clemmie Swoope of Clinton Township learns about the tools and inner workings of Macomb's crime fighters.

Be aware

The state Attorney General's Office lists the following tips on how to avoid becoming a victim of fraud:
   * Get informed: Increase your consumer literacy by educating yourself about scams.
   * Stand up to telephone solicitors: Immediately ask for the name of the person calling and the company. Reduce telemarketing calls by telling the caller to place your name on the "don't call" list. Federal law requires telemarketers to maintain and honor such lists.
   * Read the fine print: Study contracts in full before you sign. Ask questions and be wary of oral presentations that conflict with the contract.
   * Sleep on it: Don't be swayed by a high-pressure tactic. Think before you buy. Legitimate businesses will give you the same deal later.
   * Check out the business before you shop: Make sure the companies you do business with are legitimate. The Attorney General's office or local Better Business Bureau can tell you if complaints have been lodged against a company.
