G.R.E.A.T
The Gang Resistance Education and Training program is a violence prevention
curriculum that teaches students important skills to help them avoid gangs,
violence, drug abuse, and crime. The purpose of G.R.E.A.T. is to help students
develop beliefs and practice behaviors that will help them avoid destructive
habits.
G.R.E.A.T. is a 13-lesson curriculum.
The classes focus on:
- Truths about gangs and violence
- Students’ roles in their families, schools, and communities
- Goal setting tips
- GREAT Decisions
- Communication skills
- Empathy for others
- Responding to peer pressure
- Anger management
- Resolving conflicts
GREAT is currently taught in over 1,400 communities; with Macomb Sheriff’s
Deputies teaching over 2000 students this year.
Macomb County Sheriff Mark Hackel has three Deputies teaching G.R.E.A.T.
Deputy Keith Harvey has been a Deputy since 1998. He became a certified
G.R.E.A.T. instructor in 2003 and is currently assigned to L’Anse Creuse School
District, Chippewa Valley School District and Romeo School District. Deputy
Harvey’s assignments have included Correctional Officer, Road Patrol, and
currently works G.R.E.A.T. and dispatch.
Deputy Jeff Gentner has been a Deputy since 1995. He became a certified D.A.R.E.
instructor in 2002 and a certified G.R.E.A.T. instructor in 2003. Deputy Gentner
Teacher’s G.R.E.A.T. in L’Anse Creuse School district. He also teaches D.A.R.E.,
is a scuba diver and fire investigator.
Deputy Biafore has been a Deputy since 1999. He became a certified D.A.R.E.
instructor in 2001 and a certified G.R.E.A.T. instructor in 2003. He is
currently assigned in the Romeo School District, Memphis, and Immanuel Lutheran
School. Deputy Biafore also teaches D.A.R.E.
