Search and Recovery Team
(Dive Team)
The Macomb County Underwater Search and Recovery team was formed approximately
30 years ago. Outfitted with the latest equipment and technology, the team
consists of eleven (sworn) members who each have extensive training in
underwater search and recovery methods.
The team is available to respond 24 hours a day, to any body of water or
waterway in Macomb County in an emergency capacity. It also is available to
assist other agencies in evidence recovery.
Frequently called upon in drowning incidents, the Underwater Search and Recovery
Team trains together once a month throughout the year.
Training
A diver has to have the minimum of Advanced Open Water certification to be
accepted on the team. Once on the team, each team member is trained to the
certification of Master Diver.
The team trains together monthly throughout the year in both open water and in
under-ice conditions. The team puts in over 100 hours annually in training and
certification.
Equipment
Each dive team member is outfitted with a full wet and dry suit which affords
the team protection against the weather and hazardous dive conditions. They also
have the capabilities of underwater communications which allows the divers to
communicate with each other underwater and team members above the surface.
The team is assisted by the Macomb Sheriff Marine Patrol which carries officers
and equipment to numerous scenes.
NEW:
Dive team's new wheels
The Macomb County Sheriff 's dive team received a new truck this year, giving
the 11-member squad more room to store equipment when the team investigates
drowning cases, and conducts searches for evidence and stolen goods in
waterways.
The vehicle replaces an old, former emergency medical services van that was
donated by a township.
Deputy Mike VandenBoom said equipment will be located in compartments inside
the truck instead of exterior access, a change that should make it easier and
faster for team members to adorn a wet suit and access tools.
